Two awards were presented at the Annual Bike Walk Virginia Conference held in September in Williamsburg. The Local Hero Award is given to a member of the conference host's hometown who has demonstrated successful advocacy efforts resulting in improved biking, walking, and trail accommodations. The Community Champion Award is given to a corporate entity in Virginia that has worked to improve access for bicyclists and pedestrians in order to improve the quality of life in their community.

Martinsville Area Schools Celebrate WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

On Wednesday, October 3, 2007 eight schools in Martinsville and Henry County joined over 4 million children from around the world to celebrate International Walk and Bike to School Day.  The event, organized by BikeWalk Virginia's new Activate Martinsville/Henry County initiative launched in cooperation with Martinsville and Henry County School Districts and funded by the Harvest Foundation, enables children, parents, teachers, and community leaders to celebrate the benefits of walking and bicycling while raising awareness about the need to create communities that are safer for pedestrians and bicyclists of all ages and abilities.

At Patrick Henry Elementary, students, parents, guardians, faculty, and community leaders joined Principal Joan Montgomery at J. Frank Wilson Park and walked together as a "walking school bus" to the elementary school. Seven other schools held events during the school day to promote walking and biking.

Update: Better Bike Access in the City of Chesapeake
During their October meeting, members of the City of Chesapeake's Bicycle and Trail Committee were told that their concerns about better bicycle access across the the Steel Bridge is to be reviewed by Secretary of Transportation Pierce Homer's staff. The development of bicycle access across the bridge has come under sharp fire by citizens who feel that the cost is excessive. The bridge would provide bicyclists with a route to work in downtown Norfolk and to get to the countryside for rides. Other routes would cause bicyclists to use distant detours.

The Steel Bridge bike path is part of a larger plan for a path that would stretch from Cedar Road, over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River to Bainbridge Boulevard. It would be part of a bigger Dominion Boulevard improvement project from Oak Grove Connector (Route 168) to U.S. Route 17, which includes the replacement of the Steel Bridge.

"If there were better access, college students who attend Tidewater Community College could use the path. It would cut down on their expenses because they would not have to buy a car," said Christiana Teeuwen, bicyclist and member of the City committee.
