Board & Staff Set Priorities
The Board of Directors and staff of BikeWalk Virginia-Virginia Trails met for a planning retreat at the Virginia Department of Forestry in Charlottesville on February 26 and 27.
Several priority activities for the coming year include educating and advocating for "complete streets" that provide lanes for motor vehicles and bicycles as well as sidewalks for pedestrians; for programs that increase activity and lower childhood obesity, including Bike Smart and Safe Routes to School (see Programs tab at www.bikewalkvirginia.org); and for use of the Virginia Outdoor Plan as a blueprint for additional trails to serve Virginians and visitors to Virginia.

Bike Smart Schedule Set
The tentative schedule for Bike Smart Basics trainings across Virginia has been announced. Bike Smart Basics is a 12-hour hands-on training that is primarily focused on teaching bicycle safety and maintenance through schools. Participants will practice skills and rubrics that enhance bike safety programs.
Each Bike Smart Basics training is limited to 20 participants. If interested, contact Stephanie Smith today. |
Bike Summit Speakers Urge Advocates to Capitalize on Convergence
Speakers at the 2008 National Bike Summit held in Washington, D.C. last week, urged bicycling advocates to capitalize on the convergence of issues -- health, environment, traffic congestion -- to advocate for improvements in bicycling infrastructure. The large and growing number of bicyclists would increase by tens of millions more if bicycling felt more safe.
In session after session, bicycling advocates made the point that Americans need more transportation choice. "Complete streets" is one important strategy that will encourage more people to ride a bicycle. John Horsley of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials said that non-motorized transportation advocates need to develop more champions for bicycling to tell our story and include happy endings. Brad Fitch of Knowlegis/Capitol Advantage talked about how to be heard by government leaders and Steven E. Miller of the Livable Streets Alliance urged bicyclist to build coalitions. Jeff Johnson of Clif Bar talked about the 2-mile Challenge. (Enter your address, and a map shows you a two-mile radius!) Scott Bricker of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance of Portland, Oregon, described the development of " Bicycle Boulevards."
On day two, most members of the Virginia delegation (pictured above) marched on Capitol Hill to urge support for the National Parks Service Centennial Initiative and Complete Streets. Concurrently, two members of the BikeWalk Virginia staff were trained to present information on the League's Bicycle Friendly Community Program.

Sidewalk Success: Residents Can Walk to the Store!
Williamsburg residents who live in Holly Hills Carriage Homes will soon be able to walk to nearby businesses, thanks to cooperative efforts made by VDOT's Williamsburg Residency, McCale Development Corporation, and City government leaders.
Williamsburg had been trying to acquire a 0.3 mile sidewalk right-of-way for 10 years, but VDOT had blocked it because it would be adjacent to a limited-access, divided highway with a posted speed limit of 45 mph. Citizen advocates kept the pressure on VDOT to review the request with an eye to the unique local community context until policies and regulations flexed to meet local citizen needs.
Working together we can make our communities more pedestrian friendly. Could this sidewalk success story be repeated in other areas? Do you have a success story? Send it to us!

Call for Presentations - The American Trails 19th National Trails Symposium will be held in Little Rock, Arkansas, November 15-18, 2008. The theme for the 2008 Symposium is Innovative Trails: Transforming the American Way of Life. To help develop an exciting and motivating program, you are invited to submit ideas for presentations. Poster sessions are also planned in order to display information about projects or issues in a smaller format. The deadline for submitting proposals is April 18, 2008.
Student Drivers? - According to a recent AP article, "A tiny liberal arts college [in Wisconsin] hopes it has found an answer to a nagging shortage of campus parking: a bicycle giveaway. If incoming freshmen promise not to bring a car to campus for a full year, Ripon College will give them a Trek 820 mountain bike, a helmet and a lock -- a $400 value."
Pedestrian Safety -Galvanized by heightened concern about pedestrian safety, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) will host a Traffic Safety Workshop at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, April 29. The goal of this workshop is to gather policy makers and working professionals from around the region to address the causes of pedestrian deaths and injuries, and come to collaborative solutions.
Good Return on Infrastructure Investment - A federal pilot program has illustrated that investment in sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and trails that connect transit, schools, homes, businesses, and other activity centers reduces motor vehicle traffic congestion.
Earth Hour 2008 is March 29, at 8 p.m. - On March 31, 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney, Australia businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. Sydney's energy consumption was reduced by 10.2% for one hour, which is equivalent in effect to taking 48,000 cars off the road for a year. Inspired by the effort, many are joining in Earth Hour in 2008 to turn the symbolic event into a global movement.
