| Virginia PTA Joins SRTS Network |
At their February meeting, the Virginia Parent Teacher Association (VA PTA) joined the Virginia Safe Routes to School Network (SRTS). The primary goals of the Virginia SRTS Network are:
- To increase physical activity in school-aged children by improving safety
- To increase the number of children walking and bicycling to schools
- To help ensure the success of the federal SRTS program
- To institutionalize the SRTS program so that it is not dependent on one short burst of federal funding
"The Virginia PTA will greatly enhance the reach of the Safe Routes to School Network," said Stephanie Smith, Virginia Network organizer and BikeWalk Virginia education director. "We are excited about what we can do together."
Virginia is part of a SRTS State Network Project, which includes nine states and the District of Columbia selected by the SRTS National Partnership, that will initiate policy tactics to ensure success for the federal program. The SRTS State Network Project, managed for the Commonwealth by BikeWalk Virginia, is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. | Activate Martinsville-Henry County (AMHC) Hosts SRTS and Street Design Sessions |
Educators from Martinsville and Henry County gathered on February 5 to discuss the Safe Routes to School program. An overview and specifics about implementing the program in local schools were presented. Questions about resources and tools for educators, parents, and students were answered.
On the next day, local engineers and planners took part in a seminar hosted by AMHC and conducted by Michael Ronkin, street design consultant, to discuss street enhancements to include installing and repairing sidewalks and adding crosswalks at intersections, trees, planters and overhead street signs.
Ronkin took the group outside on a rainy day to discuss and time street crossing to demonstrate the potential hazard. Program Manager Jeannie Frisco said that AMHC wants to make sure there are sidewalks connecting neighborhoods safely to business districts, especially those containing post offices, restaurants, banks and other businesses people use frequently.
Activate Martinsville-Henry County (AMHC), funded by The Harvest Foundation, is striving to improve the community's health, economy and quality of life by encouraging people to walk, bike and be active.

Congratulations to Activate Martinsville-Henry County for receiving a grant for bicycle helmets from the Virginia Department of Health.

| Kennan Garvey Memorial Fund Established for Phoenix Bikes |
Kennan Garvey passed away unexpectedly on January 19, 2008, following a heart attack. Kennan's widow, Libby, and daughters Shannon and Ruth and their families are asking his friends and others who support bicycling to make a donation to the Kennan Garvey Memorial Fund of Phoenix Bikes, Arlington, Virginia. The fund will help the organization secure a more permanent site to better serve South Arlington's young people, furthering a project that reflects his and his family's interests in youth development, cycling, and the environment.
In a statement establishing the fund, Kennan's widow Libby said that Phoenix Bikes teaches kids how to repair bikes and was one of the organizations Kennan was planning to support in his upcoming retirement. "Kennan was an avid cyclist and always did most of his own bike maintenance," she said. "He would have taken great satisfaction in teaching kids to be self-reliant operators of his favorite environmentally-friendly vehicle!"
Checks may be made payable to "Greenbrier Learning Center" with notation in the memo line to "Phoenix Bike Shop/ Kennan Garvey Memorial" and mailed to:
Greenbrier Learning Center/Phoenix Bikes 5401 South 7th Road Arlington VA 22204

|
Recently, many of you who did not subscribe to receive Action Alerts have been receiving them. I have sent them to all BikeWalk Virginia enewsletter subscribers because so few had checked that they wanted to receive Action Alerts! I wanted everyone to know about SB644 and HB1270 ... and perhaps I got carried away. If you feel a little spammed by BikeWalk, I'll take the blame.
HOWEVER, if you didn't mind getting the Action Alerts and want to get them in the future, would you please do me a favor? Scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on Update Profile/Email Address and put a check in the box in front of Action Alert. I'm not going to send Action Alerts to anyone in the future unless you do this!! Promise.
Thanks for maintaining your BikeWalk Virginia e-mail account.
Sincerely,
