 Jeannie Frisco will manage the Activate Martinsville-Henry County (AMHC) program beginning in December as a BikeWalk Virginia Program Manager. The program is funded by a grant from the Harvest Foundation.
"I am really excited about the program and what it means for the Martinsville and Henry County communities," said Jeannie.
AMHC is a three-year, $1.56-million initiative that represents the largest investment of its type by a foundation. The southern Virginia community will be transformed into a place that encourages a healthy, fun and active lifestyle. Streets will be made safe and practical for cars, bicycles, and pedestrians and children will be encouraged to walk and bike to school safely.
Other local and national partners include: the National Complete Streets Coalition, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, the League of American Bicyclists, the University of North Carolina, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Formerly Assistant County Administrator of Patrick County, Jeannie was instrumental in developing tourism and the new Mayo River Trail.

Activate Martinsville-Henry County (AMHC) is accepting applications for outreach and education coordinator. The position(s) will be full-time or part-time, dependent upon the skills and qualification of the applicants, and is funded through a three-year grant from the Harvest Foundation to encourage and enable Martinsville and Henry County residents and visitors to enjoy a more active lifestyle.

| New VDOT Safe Routes to School Coordinator |
 Sarah Weisiger began work on December 10 as Safe Routes to School Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Transportation. She came to VDOT from the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission where she was a senior planner providing technical assistance on transportation and environmental planning and previously worked with the James City County Planning Division. Sarah, who enjoys hiking and canoeing, earned a master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Urban and Regional Planning.

| Alexandria Councilman Krupicka Honored by Jaycees |

In November, Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka received the Virginia Jaycees' Outstanding Young Virginians award. Krupicka was one of three Virginians receiving the award dedicated to an individuals between 21 to 40 who embody the ideals of the Jaycees: volunteerism and community leadership.
Krupicka is an advocate on the local and state levels for improving pedestrian safety. He was also recognized for involvement in civic and government service, contributions to improving the lives of residents, and voluntary service. He worked to reform the City's taxi industry and to expand pre-school access through the Governor's Start Strong Council.

Mass transit tops wish list for money - With an increase in money available to spend on transportation in Virginia for the first time in 10 years, residents of Northern Virginia would like to see a significant chunk added to mass transit spending. From Inside NoVa.com.
Pro Walk / Pro Bike - A call for presentations has been issued for the 15th biennial Pro Walk/Pro Bike Conference to be held in Seattle, WA, September 2-5, 2008. A site for submitting proposals online be posted on Monday, December 3rd. "We've chosen 'Sustainability' as the theme for the 2008 conference", said Gary MacFadden, director of operations at the National Center for Bicycling and Walking. "Under this theme we'll explore what it's going to take to build communities across the country that support and encourage bicycling and walking for transportation and recreation." This will be a great opportunity to share and learn. We encourage BikeWalk Virginia members to get on the program! Let's plan to show up in Seattle in force.
