Governor's Conference on

Greenways, Blueways & Trails

Concurrent Sessions

On Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday, simultaneous session tracks will address five components of trail building and advocacy.  Experts in each field will provide practical, detailed information.  Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

Planning and Design -- Successful greenways, blueways and trails begin with good planning and design.  Conference sessions in this track will address:

  • planning greenways, trails and rail-to-trail programs
  • tools for minimizing impact to sensitive areas
  • understanding environmental and historic reviews
  • integrating horse trails in communities
  • designing for multiple user groups
  • water trail planning and design

Construction and Maintenance -- Careful construction and maintenance help insure the continued use of existing greenways, blueways and trails. Sessions will cover:

  • backcountry and urban construction techniques
  • building and maintenance of horse trails
  • best practices in maintenance
  • assessments for maintenance
  • risk management and disaster recovery
  • protecting and reintroducing trees

Building Capacity -- Community support and participation is vital to successful trail development and ongoing use.  Conference sessions related to building capacity cover:

  • forming partnerships and involving volunteer groups
  • building consesus and community support
  • developing long distance trails in multiple communities
  • understanding public and private funding
  • public participation in legislative decisions
  • conflict resolution

Marketing and Promotion -- Whether in the planning stage or in place, greenways, blueways and trails need promotion to garner support and retain users.  This track will focus on:

  • highlighting ties between tourism, health and economic growth
  • developing and interpreting thematic trails
  • producing graphics, guides, maps and signs
  • using Web-based promotion
  • coordinating with statewide scenic programs
