Join us this April for the 5th Annual Bike Walk Virginia Conference in Olde Towne Portsmouth. This year's theme is "Making Connections" - to places, communities and each other through new approaches that bring together planning, recreation and transportation imperatives. This is the only conference in the Commonwealth devoted to addressing non-motorized mobility, comprehensive planning and health and recreational issues. The conference will provide a platform for an open exchange of ideas between planners from MPOs, towns and counties, educators and health/PE coordinators K-12, law enforcement, municipal officials, state agency representatives, cycling and walking groups and concerned citizens.

Highlights

Keynote Speaker
Ian Lockwood, Glatting Jackson Associates.

Ian Lockwood is a senior transportation engineer with the nationally recognized firm of Glatting Jackson in Orlando, Florida. Mr. Lockwood is a pioneer in the field of traffic calming in the United States and Canada. He will be sharing his creative approaches to community-oriented planning and policies that maximize livability, transportation, street design and urban revitalization.

Breakout Sessions

Increasing Safe Walking: A Behavioral and Educational Approach
Dr. Bryan Porter, Old Dominion University

This session will provide information on the pedestrian safety problem in Virginia and successful approaches to increasing safe walking. Real life applications include building collaborative partnerships and data evaluation from a community education program.

Hear how communities across the nation and in Virginia are developing methods to promote walking and biking for fun and wellness. Programs underway involving community design and planning that enhance active living environments will be discussed.

Follow the steps of a transportation project from visioning and planning through construction; learn the roles different agencies take in the process.

Expanding the Scope of Police Bicycle Operations (IPMBA)

Frequently associated with community policing, police bike operations can expanded to include drug operations, surveillance, traffic and seatbelt enforcement, crowd management, and more.
